You should always apply paint to the bare metal surface of a door for the best results. If you are remodeling a door that means using wire brushes and scraper tools to remove the existing paint. Since darker colors absorb more heat which can lead to peeling you might want to stick with a lighter shade. Garage doors are typically made from galvanized metal which conventional paints have trouble sticking to. Re apply several coats of paint until the metal is completely coloured with no metal shining through. Next prime any bare spots with a latex primer designed for use on galvanized metal then topcoat the door with a high quality exterior acrylic latex paint.

Douse the metal garage door with water use a garden hose at high setting to spray your metal garage door and wash away dust dirt grime grease or debris. Make sure to allow each coat of paint to dry before you apply the next. You could just grab any old gloss and slap it onto the surface but within days it will start flaking and peeling off. Metal garage doors can be painted by brush or by roller but if using a roller try and use one with natural fibers rather than man made.
